Rape; everyone knows someone who has been raped. Many themselves. While the actual traumatic assault itself is horrific, its effects seem never to go away-physical and emotional. Seeing a TV show or news, reading about it (including this one), hearing from family, friends or colleagues, ruminating, flashbacks and dreaming about it make victims cringe (to say the least). One would do almost anything to escape its aftermath, not to mention the assault itself. Lucky are those who manage to.
To add insult to injustice, “Only three out of every 100 rapists will ever spend even a single day in prison, according to a new analysis by Rape Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) of Justice Department data. The other 97 will walk free; facing no consequences for the violent felony they have committed. Because rapists tend to be serial criminals, this leaves communities across the nation at risk of predators. While the percentage of rapes reported to police has risen in recent years, a majority — 54% — still are not reported”, according to the Justice Department.
We wish courage to those who would try for help. That’s what it takes; courage and an openness to talk about it- even to a mental health professional. And, if one finds that courage, it also takes tenacity to see it through, no matter the pain, to find the light at the end of the tunnel and to escape to a better life.
Take heart. Help is available; RAINN being a prominent one, with a hotline.
