Rape Reprise – Fall is nearly here and time again for school
We at Counseling on Demand have written several pieces regarding sexual assault. At this particular season of the year, we are particularly concerned about the uptick in these assaults as school, is about to begin.
We begin by repeating our article entitled, The cost of a college education should never include a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted, quoting The National Institute of Justice, “An estimated one out of five women suffers some form of sexual assault at some point during her undergraduate career”. Freshman women are especially vulnerable here.
We continue with another article entitled, The Trauma of Rape
Rape changes lives; quoting, Rape Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) of Justice Department data “Only three out of every 100 rapists will ever spend even a single day in prison, according to a new analysis by. The other 97 will walk free; facing no consequences for the violent felony they have committed”.
We finish with the article entitled, Teaching Your Child About Sex
“Someone will, shouldn’t it be you?” quoting John T. Chirban, Ph.D., Th.D. a clinical instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School and author of How to Talk With Your Kids About Sex in Psychology Today who says, “Studies confirm that kids who share a good relationship with their parents, and can honestly discuss their concerns about sex, dating, and love, are less influenced by peer behavior regarding drugs, alcohol, and sex reporting
less depression and anxiety and more self-reliance and self-esteem. They are also more successful in school and develop more meaningful relationships.
We reprise these articles for the protection of our children of both sexes. For our girls and young women, we hope that we may help them avoid their life-changing trauma. For the boys and young men, we recognize that their lives can be changed as well.
It is our hope, even our mission, to do our part toward preventing, or at the very least, reducing, such abhorrent behavior. We do not pretend to be able to accomplish this alone, but with you as parents, you as young people and we as mental health professionals, together, we may.
Please join in; enlisting whomever you are able. If you feel that we can help, Counseling on Demand is here for you. You need not go through this alone. We are well versed in marriage and family counseling.
